Sydney Shen
Sydney Shen is a New York–based contemporary artist working primarily with installation and sculpture. Her practice investigates how the human body becomes a site onto which fear, belief, and ideological desire are projected, particularly in moments shaped by illness, uncertainty, and perceived existential threat.
Shen’s work is characterized by a rigorous logic of assemblage. She brings together materials and references drawn from disparate knowledge systems—medicine, religion, folklore, technology, and speculative imaginaries—allowing scientific rationality and irrational belief to coexist in uneasy tension. Through the juxtaposition of organic, industrial, and fabricated elements, she constructs environments that resist stable interpretation and instead foreground states of ambiguity, anxiety, and psychological dislocation.
Rather than treating concepts such as healing, protection, or cure as fixed outcomes, Shen approaches them as unstable narratives shaped by cultural memory and emotional need. Her practice examines how, across historical and contemporary contexts, individuals and societies turn to symbols, rituals, and material surrogates when confronted with forces that exceed human control. These gestures are neither affirmed nor dismissed; they are presented as persistent strategies through which meaning and hope are produced under conditions of fear.
By tracing continuities between past belief systems and present ideological attachments, Shen’s work reveals how divisions often arise not from facts themselves, but from the affective investments people place in competing frameworks of explanation. Her installations do not offer resolution. Instead, they create spaces in which viewers are invited to reflect on how fear reorganizes perception—and how even fragile or mistaken beliefs can momentarily function as structures of endurance.
