Vivian Greven

Artist Biography
Vivian Greven is a German painter whose work explores the visual construction of intimacy, touch, and the body within a post-digital condition. Combining the idealized forms of Greco-Roman sculpture with the polished artificiality of contemporary digital imagery, she develops a hybrid pictorial language that examines how bodies are mediated, idealized, fragmented, and reassembled across historical and technological thresholds. Her figures hover between appearance and disappearance, embodying an emotional tension defined by approach, withdrawal, and perpetual transition.
Greven’s vocabulary emerges from the intersection of classical prototypes and screen-based visual logic: smooth gradients, softened edges, and abrupt visual ruptures produce images that are at once alluring and subtly destabilizing. She often isolates torsos, limbs, or faces from narrative context, placing them in atemporal settings where desire, distance, and recognition unfold without completion. Through the recomposition of bodily fragments and a restrained sense of staging, Greven reflects on the psychological and symbolic structures of intimacy—spanning romantic, familial, and mythological frameworks.
Her images frequently suggest states of metamorphosis, with forms shifting between sculptural solidity and digital luminosity. Operating between the logics of “flesh” and “screen,” her figures inhabit a space of unstable presence. Across this terrain, Greven positions contemporary subjects within a continuous negotiation of distance and closeness, prompting reflection on how digital culture reshapes perception, relationality, and embodied experience.
