“The Body is Not Essential XII” (2016) marks an early moment in Hahn’s exploration of the theme of the body. Although the figure is simplified, it still retains narrative residue and psychological implication. The closed, downward-tilted posture conveys introspection and resistance, while revealing the historical condition in which the female body has long been constrained within both social discourse and art-historical representation. Already at this stage, Hahn begins to use the formal tension of color and pose to pry the body away from the objectifying gaze—allowing it to inhabit an autonomous space inside the painting.
